Pinterest Marketing Tips: How to get your Pins clicked

How to get your Pins Clicked. Pinterest for business help

When I first started creating pins for Pinterest one of the hardest things I found was getting the impressions, clicks, and saves I wanted on my pins so now I am sharing what I have learned with you so you can get started quicker.

Firstly it is important to understand that Pinterest is a visual search engine so keywords or search engine optimization (SEO) is very important in order to get your content in front of your target audience. Your Pinterest profile, board name, and board description, must be fully optimized with keywords relating to your niche. If these are not optimized properly it will restrict the reach of your content.

Keyword Research:

The best way to do your keyword research is on Pinterest itself, using the guided search bar. Type in what you think your potential customers will search for to see your product or service. For example, if you are offering website design: type that into the search bar this is what you will see:

Pinterest Keyword Research. Pinterest search bar

As you can see the search results show website design inspiration is the top trending keyword, followed by Website design, and website layout.

An example could be: Looking For Design Inspiration For Your Website? On the pin then use some of the other keywords you find in the guided search to create a keyword-rich pin title and pin description.

TOP TIP: An effective way to use lots of different keywords is not to use the same text you use on the actual pin in the pin title. If you scroll through your home feed on Pinterest you will notice that you see the first line of the pin title under the pin so it’s a great opportunity to add a little extra information to really entice someone to click on your pin!

As well as the guided search bar another great way to find popular keywords is to use Pinterest’s Trends Tool – this is such a great resource (I will do another post that solely focuses on this amazing tool – it really is that good). It tells you which keywords are trending at that time, it’s a great opportunity to get your content to rank highly on the platform if you can relate your content to any of these trending keywords. Not only does the trends tool show you what’s currently trending in your country, but you can search your keywords and it will show you how well they are trending and also give you other keyword suggestions. Do note that not all keywords are included in the trends tool but you can still use the guided search as I showed you above.

Once you have completed your keyword research and optimized your Pinterest account, you can get started on designing your pin. I use Canva myself, which I really like. I find it easy to create beautiful pins using their free subscription. Like me you can upgrade to their pro subscription as it offers so many extra features like; more fonts, pro-only pictures; more specialized templates. Click here to explore Canva.

This brings me to my next top tip for Pin design, it is a good idea not to use free stock images, from my own experience and the experiences of others in the Pinterest memberships groups of which I am part; we have found that using paid or original images (images I’ve taken) on pins, have performed much better on the platform. Give it a try yourself and let me know how you get on.

Best Practices Pin Checklist:

  • Have you done your keyword research relating to your content topic, don’t forget to check out the Pinterest trends tool too!

  • Are you using a paid or original new image?

  • Is the text on your pin keyword optimized?

  • Use emotional words which will help drive people to click on your pin. Tell your prospective customers how your product/service will benefit them. Some examples to get you started: Life Changing Hack, Must have, Awesome, Ultimate, Transform your xxxx

  • A large proportion of Pinterest users, use their mobile devices when searching the platform so make text large so it can easily be seen on a mobile screen, beware of using script fonts, particularly on keywords.

  • Make sure you include a call to action – yes on every pin. Tell people what they’ll find when they click on your pin or what you want them to do. Some examples for you: Get Your Free Guide, Learn more here, Discover more hints and tips, Don’t miss this, Find out more, Read my Blog for more details.

  • Once you have created your new pin you will need to save your pin image to a file, make sure you use keywords in the file name (don’t save it as “pin 1” etc) as the algorithm will read the file name and it helps them determine what your pin is about.

  • Try to make the pin description keyword-rich and different from the text you’ve used on the pin – remember it’s a good opportunity to give your potential customer more information about your product or service.

  • Lastly write a keyword-rich description to tell your new customers more about your pin. Write your pin description using proper sentences as if you are having a conversation with a person. DO NOT just keyword stuff your description, Pinterest’s algorithm does not pull keywords when they are stuffed in, they are picking them out of sentences.

The key to being successful on the platform, is to remember that Pinterest wants brand new fresh pins as that will inspire people to keep going back and using the platform. So what exactly do they mean by “Fresh New Pins”? They want brand new pin designs, and repining the same pin image to different boards is NOT what Pinterest wants. The most important thing to think about is your audience's experience on the platform if they see the same content over and over again it doesn’t inspire them to use the platform.

You can create several new pins using the same URL and post them to other relevant boards by just making some small changes to your first pin for example: alter the picture by zooming in on the current picture or change it completely, change a move the wording around, change the colors and you have a new pin!

Pinterest is a great place to showcase your business, increase your brand awareness and increase your website traffic. However, it is also hard work and can take a lot of your time up creating consistent content for the platform.
