28 Amazing Do and Don’ts for Your Pinterest Marketing Strategy

With over 4 million monthly users, Pinterest is a powerful marketing tool that you should utilize to promote your products and services, increase your brand awareness, get your content in front of a large audience, attract new customers, and drive more engaged traffic to your website. Making Pinterest an invaluable addition to your online marketing strategy.

Having a comprehensive Pinterest Marketing Strategy is essential for the success of your content on the platform. You might be asking yourself what does a good Pinterest Marketing Strategy look like? Well, to help you get started I have created this list of the most important do’s and don’ts when it comes to marketing on Pinterest, so you can successfully get your pins seen and more clicks through to your website.

The Do’s

  1. Pin regularly and be consistent – whatever regularly looks like for you. It doesn’t have to be every day if you don’t have loads of content. PRO TIP – Pinterest’s algorithm will actually work out what your consistency is, whether that’s once a day or every two days.

  2. Claim your website.

  3. Set up rich pins - this often happens automatically when you claim your website you can check if you have rich pins set up by using the Pinterest Rich Pin Validator here.

  4. Have a professional-looking picture of yourself for your profile, people will connect with you more when they can see who they are dealing with.

  5. Use Keywords in your username for example: Laura Piper | Online Marketing | Social Media Marketing.

  6. Write a profile description that includes keywords – this will help people to find your profile and your pins when they search those keywords.

  7. Use keywords for your Board Names.

  8. Write proper descriptions for your boards and pins make sure you include several keywords and keyword phrases.

  9. Create fresh new pins.

  10. Use bright colours on your pin images to stand out.

  11. Use large text to stand out amongst other pins.

  12. Always include a call to action on your pin images.

  13. Upload your Pins directly on the platform, you can use Pinterest’s free scheduler to help you save time by uploading a week or two pins in one go.

  14. Reply to messages and thank people who like your post – this will help you to build a community.

  15. Be different/unique - Serve your audience with engaging content and stand out

  16. Use the Pinterest Trends Tool – This is an incredible tool, by using trending keywords in your content will give you amazing results in the reach of your content.

  17. Hashtag 3 - 5 top keywords at the end of your pin description as this will help Pinterest understand what your content is about.

Update 3rd May 2023 - Great news Pinterest is now recognizing hashtags again, so I have moved using hashtags from the don’ts to the do’s list! Best practice is to hashtag 3 to 5 keywords at the end of your pin description which will help Pinterest to understand and rank your content. Make sure you still write a good pin description and not just use hashtags!

The Don’ts

  1. You don’t need to flood the platform with 30 pins a day anymore just be consistent with one or two pins everyday or two to three pins everyday couple of days.

  2. Create too many boards – make sure you can pin regularly to all your boards to keep them active and relevant with regular new content.

  3. Use lots of small text on your pin image – most people use mobiles when they are browsing Pinterest, make sure your pins are easily readable on mobile.

  4. Don’t be inconsistent with your pinning.

  5. Don’t delete old pins.

  6. Don’t delete boards you are no longer using – make them secret instead.

  7. Don’t use free stock photos - it is more likely that free photos are used many times in different niches and this can confuse the algorithm as to what your content is about.

  8. Don’t be boring - this is a great tip and one that always goes around my head when I create content. I want to inspire people, be different and stand out. So don’t consistently post the same thing over and over again.

  9. Don’t keyword stuff your board and pin descriptions: Pinterest user experience

  10. Don’t use just one pin type, use a variety of static, idea and video pins

  11. Don’t repin existing pins create a new pin image
